Inter Milan hosted La Liga leader Barcelona at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, Milano — a match that was nothing short of exciting. The match was held on Tuesday, 4 October 2022.
Inter Milan and Barcelona have previously met a total of four times. During these H2Hs, Barca has won three and drawn one. This time turned out different with Inter narrowly winning the game 1-nil — claimed in the first half.
The first real chance for either team came just seven minutes into the game after Hakan Calhanoglu picked up a loose ball and let fly a rasping effort that stung the palm of the Barcelona keeper, Ter Stegen.
There was a claim for a penalty in the 23rd minute after Garcia handled the ball in the penalty area. The referee went over to the pitch side monitor to have a clear look at it but ruled out the penalty after an offside was detected in the build-up.
The breakthrough goal didn’t come until the added time in the first half. Calhanoglu received the ball from DiMarco and picked out the bottom corner from 25 yards out. Ter Stegen had no chance.
Barcelona had loads of chances in the second half after Dembele hit the upright in the 61st minute and Pedri scored a goal that was ruled out for a handball infringement just five minutes later. A penalty claim was aired again in the added time of the second half but was waved off, as there was no conclusive evidence of handball.
In the end, Hakan Calhanoglu’s strike gave the win for Inter Milan which saw the team move into second place in Group C, just behind Group leader Bayern Munich. Barcelona dropped to third with its solitary win against Viktoria Plzen. They both have a goal difference of +1 each.
